In royal parlance, Kate may be a commoner, but she has some uncommon ancestors. Genealogists have combed both Prince William and Kate's family history looking for contrasts and commonality in their ancestry.
Kate and Prince William both descend from Sir Thomas Fairfax (ca. 1475-1520) and the former Anne/Agnes Gascoyne/Gascoigne. They lived at Gilling Castle in Yorkshire, where they raised six daughters and six sons, including twins William and Nicholas. Nicholas, Prince William’s ancestor, inherited his father’s estate. William Fairfax is Kate Middleton’s ancestor.
The Spencer Connections
In one of those strange twists of fate, it is through his mother’s family, the Spencers, that Prince William is related to Kate Middleton. They are 15th cousins. Prince William gave Kate as her engagement ring, the same ring his father, Prince Charles, gave to his mother, Princess Diana.
